Introduction to Intellectual Property at the age of AI
Intellectual property (IP) is a fundamental component of the protection and use of creations.
This course provides an introduction to IP rights, including author’s rights (copyright), trade marks, designs, patents, and data base protection. It gives the participants a clear understanding of the main legal principles regulating the protection and exploitation of intangible creations.
The course will then examine how the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) raises significant questions related to IP, in particular concerning the training of AI systems, the generated outputs, and also the protection of AI models themselves.
The course is intended to be accessible to all participants, no prior legal knowledge is required.
Upon completion, participants will be able to identify each IP right, understand the practical importance of IP rights, and have an informed awareness of the key questions related to the growing use of AI technologies.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify and explain the main IP rights
- Describe the basic principles regarding the protection of creations by IP and the use of protected creations
- Recognise situations in which IP rights might be relevant in practice
- Explain with their words how AI interacts with IP
- Recognise the key IP challenges raised by the increasing use of AI
