Accessibility: Why it matters for digital inclusion
With increasing digitalisation of almost any product and service, accessibility turns into a decisive consideration for any designer and developer. This 8-hour crash course provides orientation in the vast field of accessibility, allowing participants to define their personal learning path to dive deeper.
This course assumes a solid background in user experience and user interface design, as well as understanding of HTML and CSS.

Day 1: Understanding Accessibility
- Awareness building: Why accessibility matters for everyone
- Overview of cognitive and physical capabilities of people (so-called "disabilities)
- Key terms: accessibility, usability, inclusive design, design for all
- Permanent, temporary, and situational barriers
- Business opportunities created by accessible design
- Overview of assistive technologies
Day 2: Hands-on Basics of Accessible Design
- Accessible design 101: color, contrast, interaction design
- Strategic tools for involving a wide variety of users: Persona spectrum
- Evaluating accessibility, with and without users
- Beyond compliance: ethics of accessible design
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain why accessibility matters for digital inclusion, distinguishing between accessibility, usability, inclusive design, and design for all.
- Describe the range of human cognitive and physical capabilities, differentiate between permanent, temporary, and situational barriers, and outline how common assistive technologies help people overcome them.
- Apply foundational accessible design principles (color, contrast, and interaction design) to identify and address common barriers in digital interfaces.
- Use the persona spectrum and basic evaluation methods, both with and without users, to consider a wide variety of users in design decisions and assess the accessibility of a digital product.
- Argue for accessible design beyond legal compliance, drawing on ethical and business perspectives
- Plan their personal learning path for further developing their accessibility expertise.
