ELEMENTS OF AI – Talk Time: AI Regulation in Europe: Public governance and Risk implications

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly used across public administrations, companies, and everyday digital tools. As AI systems become more powerful, European legislators have introduced a structured regulatory framework to ensure that innovation remains aligned with fundamental rights, safety, and public trust.

This talk time provides a clear and accessible overview of how AI is regulated in Europe, with a focus on the EU AI Act and its interaction with the broader legal ecosystem. The objective is not to analyse legal technicalities, but to explain the logic behind the European approach to AI governance and the responsibilities it creates.

The second part of the session presents the main risks associated with AI deployment and explains what can happen when these risks materialise. Participants will be informed about potential legal consequences (fines, liability, suspension of systems), organisational disruptions, reputational damage, and societal impacts such as discrimination or loss of trust.

Delivered from a public authority perspective, this session aims to strengthen awareness and provide a structured understanding of AI governance in today’s regulatory environment.
