Networking Essentials
As modern IT systems rely on well-structured and secure networks, understanding networking fundamentals is crucial for anyone entering the digital workforce.
This course equips learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to understand how networks operate—including the devices, media, and protocols that enable communication. It also develops essential troubleshooting and support techniques aligned with real-world helpdesk practices.
This course is designed for individuals with little to no prior networking experience who are looking to build a strong foundation in computer networks. It is ideal for:
- Anybody exploring careers in IT, cybersecurity, or computer science.
- Entry-level IT support staff or junior technicians working in helpdesk or hardware support roles.
- Non-technical professionals - such as sales, project management, or operations staff - who work in tech environments and need basic networking knowledge.
- Learners preparing to take the Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) certification or those looking to transition into CCNA-level training.
Content
- The fundamentals of communication and networking in a connected world.
- Identify network components, connection types, and media ; Configure small wired and wireless networks.
- Implement IPv4 and IPv6 addressing and subnetting and apply core protocols such as TCP, UDP, DHCP, ARP, and ICMP.
- Use the Cisco IOS command-line interface to configure and test devices and perform basic network troubleshooting using standard tools and utilities.
- Build and test home and small office networks and design basic network topologies and address schemes.
- Configure routers, switches, and access points.
- Explain key layers of the OSI and TCP/IP models.
- Secure a basic network using foundational cybersecurity practices and support users with common connectivity issues.
Learning Outcomes
By completing this course, learners will:
- Understand key networking concepts such as IP addressing, switching, and routing.
- Identify and work with core network components including switches, routers, and wireless access points.
- Build, test, and troubleshoot a basic home or small office network.
- Use basic command-line tools in Cisco IOS to verify connectivity.
- Apply best practices in basic network security and support operations.
Certification
Certificate of ParticipationPrerequisites
