Introduction to Computer Networks
A general and theoretical introduction to computer networks, according to the ISO/OSI Layer Model, after the famous book by Andres S. Tanenbaum. We will explain how networks work, from the inside out, providing an understanding of the main concepts and topics. Beginning with the physical layer of networking, computer hardware and transmission systems, we will work our way up to network applications.
The course content is organised in five units which will be taught over 5 days. Each course unit uses a consistent approach in which the key principles are first presented, then illustrated utilizing real-world example networks with some practical exercises.
Content
Unit 1 - Introduction
- Definition and goals. Design issues. Network architecture-broadcast & point to point. Models-OSI reference & TCP/IP and their comparative study.
- Network classification : LAN, WAN & MAN. Protocols & services.
- Types of services: connection oriented and connection-less. Diverse protocols.
- Transmission Media: Twisted Pair, Coaxial cable, Fiber optic cable, Wireless transmission, telephone system, multiplexing, switching-circuit, packet & message switching,
- Virtual circuit switch.
- Network devices: repeater, bridge, router, gateways, network interface cards, cabling system.
Unit 2 – Data Link Layer
- Framing
- Error control: Bit Error, causes of error, control methods.
- Flow control: Stop & wait, sliding window concept, piggybacking.
- Local Area Network Technology: Protocols- Aloha, CSMA, CSMA/CD, Collision free protocols, IEEE 802 protocols, standard topologies, cabling system.
- Network management. MAC addressing. Frame format. Ethernet.
Unit 3 – Network Layer
- Introduction. Features & design issues. Routing (different routing algorithms). Congestion control.
- Internetworking : Concepts and architecture.
- Addressing: IP Addressing and subnet masking, IP protocols, Network Address Translation, Address resolution protocol (ARP).
Unit 4 – Transport Layer
- Introduction. Design issues. Transport layer addressing. Buffering. Multiplexing. Recovery.
- TCP/IP suit of protocols. TCP & UDP Network applications.
- Connection establishment. Connection release. TCP Header.
Unit 5 – Application Layer
- Introduction to application layer.
- Application layer protocols : electronic mail, file transfer.
- Remote login.
- WWW.
- Multimedia.
- Firewalls and introduction to cybersecurity.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this course the participant will be able to:
- Understand basic computer network technology.
- Discuss Data Communications System and its components.
- Identify the different types of network topologies and protocols.
- Describe the layers of the OSI model and TCP/IP, and explain the function(s) of each layer.
- Describe the different types of network devices and their functions within a network.
- Explain the basic protocols of computer networks, and how they can be used to assist in network design and implementation.
Training Method
- Introduce learners to the fundamental concepts of computer networking.
- Familiarize learners with the basic taxonomy and terminology in the area of computer networking.
- Discuss advanced networking concepts.
- Allow the participant to gain expertise in some specific areas of networking, such as the design and maintenance of individual networks.
- Prepare the learner for access to advanced courses in computer networking.

Nico BINSFELD
Dr. Nico Binsfeld, born in Luxembourg on April 4, 1961, is a seasoned professional with over 35 years of experience in the ICT sector. He has held various senior management positions, including Managing Director at ACN Advisors sàrl, Chief Technical Officer at Eltrona Interdiffusion SA, CEO at House of Training and CEO of Post Telecom PSF SA.
Nico has extensive knowledge in telecommunications, IT integration, and the local ICT ecosystem. He is proficient in Luxembourgish, German, French, and English. His formal education includes a Master of Science from Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen and a Doctor of Business Administration from Newcastle Business School. Nico has also been active in teaching and tutoring for over 30 years, with roles at institutions such as the University of Luxembourg, Open University Business School, and Université Paris 2 Assas. He has published several academic papers on ICT ecosystems and innovation in Luxembourg. Additionally, he has been involved in various professional organizations and continuous professional development activities.
