Digital Illustration with Procreate
This course introduces beginners to digital art through the iPad application Procreate. Participants will learn the fundamentals of illustration, including color theory, shading, shape language, and composition, while also exploring diverse art styles and introductory techniques in 2D animation. Through a combination of guided practice and supporting theory, learners will develop both technical skills and a foundational understanding of digital illustration.
Content
- Introduction to digital art and art in general
- Basics of Procreate: pricing, system requirements, user interface, gestures, tools, and settings
- When not to use Procreate
- Overview of digital illustration tools: tablets, computers, and software requirements
- Graphics formats: distinguishing pixel- vs. vector-based formats
- Workflow phases: sketches, drawing, and color studies

Learning Outcomes
- Navigate the Procreate interface and configure essential tools and settings.
- Distinguish between pixel- and vector-based formats and select appropriate formats for digital illustration projects.
- Apply core digital illustration workflows, from sketching and drawing to color studies.
- Create digital drawings in Procreate using varied brushes, line widths, shading, and shapes.
- Apply principles of composition, including symmetry, asymmetry, negative space, color, and contrast, to enhance visual design.
- Produce simple animations using Procreate Dreams.
Training Method
The course combines theoretical input with practical application. Lectures and demonstrations introduce core principles, while structured exercises allow participants to practice skills in Procreate. Interactive components such as group discussions and Q&A sessions provide opportunities for reflection, peer learning, and individual feedback.
Additional Information
Participants are welcome to bring their own iPads with pens (e.g., Apple Pencil) to the course. Acquiring Procreate is required for this training. If participants do not have their own iPads, Digital Learning Hub will provide iPads with Apple Pencils (only to be used during the course).Certification
