Computer-aided design (CAD) for beginners: Start designing your own parts (3D files)
Join our introductory CAD course using Onshape, where you’ll learn to create practical, functional parts. This program serves as an excellent extension to our 3D printing course, providing the skills needed to design your own parts. You’ll gain proficiency in designing parts by interpreting drawings, working with existing components, and creating entirely original designs from scratch. We selected Onshape, a cloud-based 3D design tool, for its free non-commercial use. Transitioning to Fusion 360, SolidWorks or another Parametric Feature-Based CAD later is seamless. This CAD course suits hobbyists, teachers, or employees looking to swiftly apply their new skills to 3D printing, CNC milling, or laser cutting.
Content
- Introduction to Parametric Feature-Based CAD
- Introduction to CAD Basics (extrude, revolve, loft)
- Interpreting drawings and existing parts
- Designing simple parts
- Exporting 2D and 3D files
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, learners will be able to :
- design practical and functional parts in CAD
- interpret drawings
- modify existing components
- craft original designs from inception
- use the cloud-based 3D design tool Onshape
- know how to use Parametric Feature-Based CAD software
- transfer skills in 3D printing to CNC milling and laser cutting applications
Training Method
Our CAD course adopts an interactive training approach centered on Onshape as the design platform. Each participant will have their own PC, allowing for hands-on learning throughout the sessions.
The methodology involves a demonstration of part design techniques, followed by practical replication. Through guided exercises and progressive tasks, participants will swiftly transition to designing independently.
The course dynamically adjusts to the specific requirements and skill levels of the participants. Exercises and examples will be tailored on-the-fly, ensuring relevance, and addressing the individual needs of the class.
